This year I have the amazing opportunity to be a part of a school that is currently working on “rebuilding with a stronger foundation” using a strong focus on STEAM. As a team, our small staff is working hard on exposing our students to as much academic vocabulary as possible, in every subject and special! The librarian asked for support with setting up bulletin boards in our library and I was thrilled to help.
As the librarian is teaching each genre, she will bring the students into this section of the library to discuss the characteristics of each story. This will be a great place for students to reference as they are looking for different types of genres to read independently! Our goal is that the genres that are learned in class will factor over to library and vice verse. One of the biggest struggles high poverty students have on standardized testing is the vocabulary. They may know what the genre is if asked orally and could explain it, but they are unable to read the word and make the connection. Hopefully, by placing the genre posters around the library will help support our need for students to recognize academic vocabulary. The envelope will be used for students to add a book title to a paint chip circle and to place inside the envelope.
