The first thing I do to get ready is put my 101st day outfit on... Drum roll please... That's right I'm Cruella, the kids love it. Dress-up isn't just for Halloween! My students join me in their spotted shirts that we make the day before. Here are a few fun activities that are sure to keep your students excited and ready to celebrate the 101st day.
You can do them as a whole group or have students rotate through stations to complete each activity. I prefer the latter. My students rotate every 20 minutes to a new activity. I walk around and offer help, monitoring the activities as they complete them.
Activity 1: Puppy Hats
Use construction paper to make a head band, attach two construction paper ears on the side. Have students use the paint dotters and some black paint to add 101 spots to their ears. This is a great way to reinforce those counting skills and number sense. Have students count out loud as they make each spot. When they are done have them add their spots what does 50 +51 equal?
Activity 2: Puppy Collars
Have kids create their own puppy collars using these adorable black and white beads. Just use a white pipe cleaner and string them on. My students make a collar with 10 beads. We add a dog charm to the middle. Once all of our collars are assembled my little puppies line up and we count by 10's. This is a great way to reinforce their number sense and make a concrete connection to the numbers.
Activity 3: Puppy Chow
I set dog bowls filled with cereal onto the tables, there are a few Scooby snack bones on the top. Students use their 101 days in school counting mat to count out 10 kibbles per bowl. Once they have done this and counted aloud to 100 I reward them with a Scooby snack to make 101. This is probably my students favorite activity for the 101st day. They get so excited over the fun dog bowls and cereal....Nom nom nom! Download the Free Counting Worksheet Printable here!
Activity 4: Paw Print Stampers
One of my last activities that my students complete is a paw print stamper. They use these fun paw stampers to count to 101. Saying their numbers as they stamp their paper. When all of our counting fun is done we celebrate with a few fun puppy photos, these dog photo props are quite the hit with my little puppies. They make for some fun photos that are sure to be a keepsake from their 101st day in school!
I hope you have a wicked good time celebrating the 101st day!
