- 1 Watermelon
- Mixed Fruit

Using a sharp chef's knife, cut one end of the watermelon off (about 3-4 inches thick). Keep both parts because you will be using them!

Using a melon baller or cookie scoop, scoop out the watermelon from the large part. I made little melon balls to use in my fruit salad later, but you could also scoop out large chunks at a time with a big spoon and chop into bite size pieces. Continue until all watermelon is cleaned out of the large piece. Store watermelon balls or cut pieces in a bowl in the refrigerator.

Lay the smaller 3-4 inch watermelon end flat side down, and cut in half. Clean the watermelon fruit out of one half.

Now for the fun part. It's time to carve out the helmet shape. Lay the large scooped out watermelon piece flat side down. Using a dry erase marker or permanent marker, draw the helmet shape on the watermelon TIP: you can also use a pencil which will make an indented marking for where you need to cut. Using a small sharp pairing knife, cut out the helmet opening and discard.

Next carve out your face mask. Using the cleaned half end watermelon piece, draw a face mask grid. I drew two long rectangles in the center and four long sideways triangles on the sides. Using a sharp pairing knife, carve out the face mask holes. Using toothpicks (or half toothpicks), secure the face mask to the helmet piece.

If you can make your watermelon helmet the day of the party, this is ideal. If you need to make it the night before, simply place the finished helmet on a plate and cover loosely with damp paper towels to keep it moist until morning. When it's party time, place the watermelon helmet on a silver serving tray. Combine watermelon balls with more mixed fruit and scoop fruit salad into the helmet and all over the platter. Set out a serving spoon and football paper cups and I guarantee this watermelon football helmet will be the star of the party!
