Begin by turning a large basswood canvas square over so that the flat portion becomes the back. Using a foam sponge brush, apply wood stain to the inner and outer frame portion of the wood canvas. Set aside to allow the stain to dry.
Once the stain has fully dried, tape the inner sides of the frame. Paint the flat inner portion white.
Next, add one long piece of washi tape along the top edge of the canvas. Leave a narrow space then add a length of thin washi tape parallel to the first. Apply a second length of thin washi tape slightly wider than the width of the first two, followed by another long piece of washi tape the same distance apart as the first two. You should end up with one narrow line on either side of a wider line. Be sure to smooth the tape against the canvas to ensure paint doesn't seep under the tape.
Once the washi tape has been smoothed, paint over all three sections with red paint. You may need to apply a few coats to fully cover the white.
While the red paint on the sign is drying, count out 26 small and 13 large unfinished wood beads and paint them red. To keep paint off of your fingers and make it easier to hold the beads, add a cotton swab to each.
Once the paint on the first three stripes has dried, remove the tape and turn the canvas one quarter, and then repeat Step 3 to apply washi tape perpendicular to the first grouping of stripes. Paint the newly taped off stripes red as well.
Remove the tape once the paint has dried then measure to find the center of the sign. Using a pencil, lightly draw two long intersecting lines through the middle to form a plus sign to use as a guide for the snowflake.
Starting from the center and working your way outward, begin creating the snowflake shape on the canvas by using hot glue to affix the large wood beads along the guide lines.
Continue adding the beads, using four smaller beads to form the four shorter snowflake arms coming out of the center of the sign.
