You will need around 20 small wood slices for each trivet. Paint 10 of the wood slices with craft paint and a foam brush (I used two coordinating colors, such as a light green and a dark green, for each trivet). Leave the remaining wood slices unpainted. You can also paint 6-8 mini wood circles in the same colors. These will be used to fill in any gaps between the wood slices.
Hot glue the wood slices to a wood disc by apply a dab of glue to the backside of each wood slice. Start around the outside edge of the wood disc, and alternate the painted and unpainted wood slices in a random pattern as you fill in the disc. Position the wood slices close together and fill in any gaps between the wood slices with small wood circles. If you like, you can repeat the process to make a set of trivets in different colors.
Use your new wood slice trivets underneath a coffee press or other hot kitchen pots and pans. The wood discs come in a pack of 12 so you can make multiple trivets for yourself and to give as gifts. The wood slice trivets make a cozy pairing with these white winter ceramic mugs!
