Cut a rectangle from cardboard. For a key chain size weave, I cut the cardboard 3.75″ x 5″.
Across the tops make ½” pencil marks where you will score the cardboard.

Cut the pencil marks to create slits for the yarn.

Hot glue the craft sticks across the top right below the marks you just cut. Repeat at the bottom of the cardboard.

Cut 6 pieces of yarn and thread through each slit you made. Tape the yarn on the backside of your loom, making sure the yarn is taunt.

Choose your first color. Cut a piece of yarn and thread it through the plastic needle. Using the up and over pattern, begin to weave your first row. Pull the yarn through and tie a knot at the end to keep it from unraveling as your kids weave.
Continue weaving with the needle. When you get to the end of loom, pull the thread all the way through and go back the other direction repeating the over and under pattern.

You can choose to alternate colors of yarn or make the entire loom one color.
The longer and wider you cut the cardboard in step 1, will determine how large your loom and final weaved product will be.

To take off the weave, remove the tape and yarn from the back of your loom. Tie knots in the loose ends to prevent the weave from unraveling.
I used the cute fall place mat activity to get my kids started on the weaving process. First, they needed to learn the over and under pattern. Once they had the pattern technique down they tried the loom activity!
