Start by having your students create their own reading log / reading journal. Just take one of the colorful notebooks then add a strip of coloring tape. This is an easy activity and doesn’t take much prep time. This notebook is where your students will record each book they read over the summer. They can record a whole book at a time or create a journal entry after each chapter read. This can be customized based on your students’ reading level and ability.

After each journal entry, whether it’s based on page count, chapters or whole books, they get to color one section of their design (coloring tape). By the end of the summer they will hopefully have one colorfully decorated reading log that is filled with the books they have read. This is a great way to boost accountability and keep your students’ reading and developing their reading comprehension over the summer.

To make sure that my students are on their way to summer reading fun we also make a fun bookmark so they can keep their place as they get lost in their favorite adventures and tales. I start off by having my students pick at least 4 colors of craft ribbon.

Next, take the coloring tape and add it to the back of the paint chip strip. Trim off any excess and make sure to smooth any bumps.

Then, take the scissors and cut a slit about 1/2 inch down from the top of the bookmark. Slide your ribbons through and slightly separate.

Now your ready to finish it up. Just tie each ribbon in a knot.

You’re all set you have your very own doodle bookmark. I introduce the same concept with these as I did with the journal. Start by setting a goal for yourself. It might be pages read, finishing a chapter or an entire book. Each time you make your goal you color a section of your bookmark. By the end of the summer you will have a colorful creation that will remind you just how many adventures you have gone on through your books.

Add in a few extra goodies into your tie-dyed drawstring bags like some glow in the dark sunglasses. Download the Free Reading Tag Printable here! Print and tie onto the bag with some ribbon . Your students have a great gift from you and are ready to start their reading adventures.
