Use a project foam board to create this Safari Sight Words portable station. First, staple or tape a raffia door curtain to project board as your background.
Add palm leaves to the top and the sides of the project board.
Add bamboo garland by cutting it into pieces and taping or hot gluing throughout for more depth and color.
Hide sight words throughout the board. Cover the words just enough so students have to look for them but not so much that they have to move the raffia or bamboo around in order to see them.
Add containers to place materials in; Include a hat, binoculars, animal print bandanas, safari animal notepads, animal finger puppets, and scratch safari ornaments.
As students find words through their binoculars, they can write each word in their animal notepad.
After they've written their words, they choose their favorite word to write on a scratch safari ornament to wear around their neck. You can encourage everyone in the classroom to ask the student what that word is. This is great practice for everyone (not just the student wearing the word necklace).
Finally, have students practice reading their words to an animal finger puppet. They love this!
