Paint the entire slat sign using white acrylic paint and allow to dry completely before the next step. Be sure to get inside the grooves of the sign for complete coverage.
I used a personal cutting machine to cut out the vinyl for this sign. If you don’t have a cutting machine, Etsy has many vinyl stencils for purchase in a lot of fun styles and fonts. Apply the vinyl stencil sticky side down and be sure to smooth it out any bubbles.
For this next step, bring the sign outside to apply the stain or make sure you’re in a well ventilated area. Using a foam brush, apply stain across the top of the board…vinyl and all. Make sure the stain is getting inside the grooves of the board. As soon as the stain is applied, wipe off the excess with a paper towel. Cover the board completely with the stain and allow to dry outside for 24 hours.
Once the stain has dried, peel the vinyl off to uncover the white paint underneath. Some of the stain may have bled under the vinyl and if that happens, simply use your foam brush and white paint to touch it up. Another way to make this sign is to apply the stain to the slat sign and allow to dry. Then place the white vinyl stencil on top of the sign. I didn’t want my vinyl to peel off throughout the years, but either way you choose to make it the sign will make a sweet statement at your rehearsal dinner.
And there you have it! A beautiful sign to display at your rehearsal dinner as well as a sweet reminder of the adventurous spirit the two of you have.
Be sure to check out how to incorporate this sweet sign in my Outdoor Rehearsal Dinner, S‘mores Station Favors, and my delicious Peach Crisp Recipe.
