The first customizable part of this project is choosing your fabric. The possibilities are endless! Once you’ve chosen your fabric, you’ll want to use your canvas as a guide to cut the fabric into a square shape. Try to leave an inch or two around all edges so you have plenty of excess to work with.

Use a hot glue gun to adhere your fabric to the back of your canvas. Start by doing opposite ends, top and bottom, and then moving onto the sides, almost wrapping it like a gift.

Now, for the letter style you want to use for your monogram. Download our Letter Template and open it in Microsoft Word. Enter the letter of your monogram into the doc and choose the font you’d like to use. Do your best to center the letter inside the square of the template by adjusting the size of the letter if needed. Next, you’ll print out your letter template and cut out the square.

Once you’ve printed and cut out your letter template, you’ll want to place it in the center of your canvas. Try using a few pins or needles to hold your paper centered and steady.

Next, add the buttons! Select the size/shape of buttons you’d like to use for your monogram, and lay them over your letter template until you have a design you like. Use your needle to poke holes through the button holes, through the canvas. Poke holes in all of the buttons to create a guide to work from. Then, put your buttons aside and remove your paper template. You should be able to see the holes you made in the back of your canvas.

Thread your needle and tie a knot in the end. Starting from the back of your canvas, begin your stitching through the hole of one of the points of your letter design. Pull your thread from back to front, then thread your button through and stitch back through to the back. Follow your guide, stitching all your buttons to your canvas until completed. Then tie your thread off on the back side to secure.

And voila! You have an adorable, hand-stitched button monogram! You won’t believe how simple and FUN this project is! You can see how I applied this same technique using different fabrics, letter styles and buttons in these three examples! I hope this tutorial inspires you to create something unique in your own color scheme and style for your wedding day!
