With a fine tip paintbrush and very little water on your brush, dip it in the black paint. Start by painting the trunk of the tree. It’s just a matter of painting a straight line down and then adding branches and the base of the trunk. Watercolor can be pretty forgiving when you use a napkin and a little water, but with this you want as little water as possible to make the darker lines without the spreading of the water.

Start adding hearts with red paint. All the hearts are made with red paint. I would keep doing hearts until the paint was too light, and then add more. I added to the outside of the tree first, going around the edges. Do them in different sizes, and if you want, do them in different colors! Rainbow hearts would be cute, or purples, blues…make this your own!

Continue filling it hearts until you get the look on top that you want.

Next add a few “falling hearts” toward the bottom of the painting and add a few hearts to the small branches as well.

Finish by dipping your paintbrush in black again, and spread your root into a word of your choice. I chose love and just played it out in cursive. Take your time and do just one letter at a time. Watercolors will let you make it all flow together nicely. Just pick up your paintbrush and get more paint if you need to!

Add another little heart to the end of the word if you want and ta-da! You did it! A fun little painting you can put on your mantel or hang on your wall for the month – or really all year long.
