Paint the roof of the birdhouses white. We left the bottom portion natural wood to have a nice contrast. You could paint the entire birdhouse but we were going for a more mid-century white on wood look. Let the paint dry. To speed up the drying process you can always use a hair dryer on cool setting.

After birdhouse roof is dry, apply color-your-own washi tape onto the roof. You can trim the ends of the tape after applying. You can position the tape however you wish. I made one completely covered in tape and did another at an angle, leaving a third of it white. I also added some solid thin washi tape for an extra pop of color.

Now the fun part – using permanent markers, color in the patterns on the washi tape. You can go with a mono-chromatic theme or go crazy with color!

These birdhouses are a perfect pop of whimsey to any bookshelf or desk. How cute would they be on a shelf in your child’s room – make three to have as a display. They would make a darling hostess gift or even teacher gift. Have fun getting creative with this fun washi tape craft idea!
