Layer additional placemats, slightly overlapping, in rows of four. You will end up with three rows of four mats, and these will fully cover your board, without going more than 2″-3″ off the surface on any edge.

Apply a bead of glue to the inside cardboard portion of one patterned hanging tissue fan and close to adhere. Trim off the cardboard piece that extends from the end, so that the edge is even with the rest of the fan.

Using the largest fans first, layer the fans so that they are overlapping on the board, gluing down once you are certain of their placement. Try not to place repeating patterns next to one another. It’s important to keep in mind where the bottom of your project is, so that you don’t extend the fans too far over the edge of the board, which, when stood up, will cause them to crumple. Open a Shabby Chic Lace Paper Hand fan, and apply a line of hot glue along the back of the wooden side, as shown. Layer the fan into your arrangement. Take care in this step when pressing down, so that you do not flatten the other fans you have already placed. It can seem daunting at first, but you’ll get a feel for it quickly once you try! Continue layering in the hand fans in random directions and places, until you get a look that is pleasing to your eye.

Here’s a look at our completed project. You can see that some of the placemats peek out from behind the layered fans, which is much prettier than the edge of the cardboard backing showing. You might also note that we trimmed the bottom of our piece, as our fans did extend a bit much past the bottom edge of the board.

Here’s the finished piece, as it looked at our Vintage Romantic Bridal Shower. We added a couple extra loose fans at the top, and love the way this accented the head of our table!
