Cut a few different lengths of PVC pipe and paint them with green acrylic paint. Allow time for the paint to dry.

Fill a Large Galvanized Pail with a foam floral brick, scrap paper and sand. The sand will be important so the flowers don't fall over! Poke the painted PVC pipes into the floral foam.

Spray the inside of the bucket with expanding spray foam and let the foam set. This will help hold the PVC pipe in place as well as weigh down the bucket. Once the foam is set, paint the foam with green acrylic paint.

Carefully insert a DIY Medium Foam Ball onto the top of the PVC pipe and use hot glue to adhere it in place. Paint the foam ball with black acrylic paint and allow time for the paint to dry.

Fold a sheet of Black Tissue Paper into a 3” strip and staple the folded edge. Cut the unstapled edge into fringe making sure not to cut through the stapled edge. Glue the stapled edge around the black painted foam ball.

Fold 10-15 sheets of Red Tissue Paper and staple the tissue paper together along the folded side. Cut the tissue paper sheets into 4 sections. Cut the tops of the sections into scallops. Gather the stapled edge of the petals and staple the gathers together to form flower petals.

Cut large leaf shapes from green cardstock and hot glue them to the PVC pipe.

Use hot glue to carefully glue the red tissue petal sections onto the black foam ball. We glued 4-5 sections onto each of the flowers. Once the glue is set, separate the tissue paper pieces with your fingers to create a fuller poppy flower.

These DIY Giant Poppy Flowers are a great addition to any spring school assembly or play. We used ours as decorations for a themed Wizard of Oz Trunk or Treat set-up. For more Wizard of Oz decorations, be sure to check out the full Wizard of Oz Inspired Trunk or Treat Idea here.
