First decide what colors you would like your piñata dress to be. Go ahead and separate the tissue paper into the colors you would like to use. Cut at least 5-6 sheets of each color you chose into 5” x 30” strips. This process will go quicker if you cut three sheets layered together with an X-acto® knife and ruler.
Next measure about 1” from the top of the strips and draw a line to indicate the 1” border. Go ahead and keep the 3 layers of sheets together when making these measurements. Then cut fringe on the bottom 4” of the strips. You can cut the fringe to be wide or thin. Go ahead and keep the 3 layers of sheets together when cutting the fringe.
Starting from the center bottom front side of the dress take a fringed strip and Glue Dot® it starting from the center of the fringed strip and working towards the ends of the strip (the sides of the dress). When gluing down the fringe leave about 2” of space between each Glue Dot®. You may have excess fringe on the sides of the dress which will be connected to the backside of the dress.
Continue layering the fringed strips up the dress until you have about 6 layers completed. Carefully flip over the dress and start layering the back portion, starting with the excess fringe from the sides. Continue the process until the dress is complete. Remove any unnecessary fringe along the way.
To make the ears:
Use the same method of cutting the fringe for the ears as you did for the dress. Except the strip measurements will be 1 1/2” x 15” with the border on the top being 1/2”.
Wrap the favor cones with the fringed strips starting from the bottom and working towards the top. Use the same method of wrapping the favor cones the way you did the dress. Remove any unnecessary fringe along the way. Add long strips of dangling tissue to the top of the cones.
There are several ways to attach the cones to your hair. The easiest way would be to glue the cones to a headband. The method we used was to cut slits in the bottom sides of the cones and slide a piece of ribbon through each cone leaving excess ribbon hanging out the sides. Then we attached the cones to the hair using bobby pins, sliding them through the ribbon and hair. We pulled the ribbon tightly from the sides of each cone so that it firmly attaches to the hair and cut off the excess ribbon.
To make the Piñata stick:
Take a piece of fringed tissue and wrap it around the dowel starting from the top and work your way down. Lift up some of the fringe so it can be seen on the stick. Continue wrapping with fringe until the dowel is covered. Add tissue strips to the top of the dowel. Now your costume is complete!
