Begin by fully covering the DIY unfinished wood star shapes with white paint.

While the paint on the larger white stars is drying, separate 24 small stars from the bag of DIY assorted wood shapes and paint them blue. I chose a darker royal blue for mine, but you can choose a color that suits your color scheme.

Once the paint has fully dried on the larger DIY star shapes, add 7 pieces of thin washi tape on the diagonal with a thin space in between each line. I didn't measure this step, but tried to distribute the tape evenly so I would end up with 7 red stripes and 6 white just like the American flag. Make sure to press firmly and evenly on the washi tape to ensure paint does not seem underneath in the next step.

Paint over the entire star, including over the tape, with red paint. This might take a few coats depending on how opaque you would like the paint to look. Carefully remove the washi tape from each star while the paint is still slightly wet. Touch up any spots where the paint may have slipped under the tape.

After the paint on both the larger and smaller stars has fully dried, use a hot glue gun to adhere two small blue stars onto each of the larger red and white striped stars. I added one to the upper left corner and the lower right corner of each larger star.

Next, cut six blue star straws in half and adhere them to the back of each striped star using hot glue. Be sure to place the straw in the center of the star between the two bottom points.

Now it's time to top the cupcakes! Crush a few blue and red rock candy lollipops and sprinkle the candy onto store-bought cupcakes with white frosting and then place one topper into the center of each cupcake.

Finally, I wrapped a small strip cut from a blue bandana around each cupcake to coordinate with our theme and add a bit of extra flair to the cupcakes!
