Lay your first dowel rod out and loop the Natural 5mm Cording over the rod. Cut the cord to your desired length so that it’s even on both sides of the rod. Note that it’s better to cut your cording a little longer than you want since you’ll need to trim it in a later step anyway.

Use the first trimmed piece of cording as a template to cut a large pile of cut cords. They don’t all have to be perfectly even since, again, you will trim them in the last step, but cut them so that they’re roughly the same length. You’ll need about 30-35 pieces of cut cords to cover a 14-in. dowel rod.

Lay the dowel rod out directly in front of you. Slip your first piece of cut cording under the rod folded in half so that a loop forms under the rod. Stick your pointer finger through the loop while holding the rod steady.

With the rod still held steady over the cording, open the loop made in Step 3 wider with your pointer finger and thumb.

Reach through the loop and grab the two ends of cording on the other side of the rod with your pointer finger and thumb.

Pull the two ends of cording through the loop and over the rod.

Pull the cording tight to complete the knot. Move it off to the side of the rod and repeat steps 3-7 with the rest of your cut cords. Leave 1-2 in. of rod exposed on either side.

Add Large Oval 6mm-hole Beads to your pieces of cut and knotted cords. Create any pattern or color combination you want! You can either knot the beads in place from below, or use clear-drying craft glue to secure them in place. If you use glue, allow it to dry for 24 hours before handling.

Use scissors to even out the bottom edge of the cut cords, or leave them uneven if you want a more organic look.

Triple knot a piece of cut fishing line or baker’s twine to either side of the dowel rod, and hang it from a small finishing nail lightly hammered into the wall. If you want to layer a few wall hangings together, consider repeating the steps using smaller 3mm Natural Cording and Chunky 5mm-hole Beads. The color and pattern combinations are practically endless, so get creative and pull inspiration from the mass-produced woven wall hangings that you love as you craft your own knotted art!
