Begin by spraying the canvas with different colors of paint.
Have fun and channel your inner punk! It doesn't need to be neat or perfect. Even better if you don't like a color spray over it. I started with a light spray and got darker once I was happy with the look.
I also added hand-painted graffiti in some areas, splatters of paint (using a paintbrush) and marble effect spray paint to give it an authentic messy look.
Tip: Lay the canvas out in an area suitable for spray painting and please follow painting safety instructions

Next, prepare the stencils for the words you will be adding to the backdrop. Select the stencils you like from the Awesome Alphabet Stencils and cut the letters out (leave a border around each letter) to create single letters.
Then lay out the words you will be using. On my backdrop, I used "God Save The Bride", "Love" and "Punk".
Stick the letters together with small bits of tape. Note: Any area with tape will not allow paint through onto the canvas. Use smaller pieces of tape or leave untapped if you prefer paint between letters.

Next, prepare the image stencils. First, find an image you like online (I looked up 'Punk Silhouette' and got a great selection) and print it out.
Place the black & white image under a clear sheet of stencil plastic and using a sharpie trace the blacked out portions of the image. Then use a blade to cut along the lines, you are cutting out the blackened parts of the silhouette.

Lay the letter and image stencils onto the backdrop banner. Secure them using double-sided tape on the plastic borders.
Tip: Lay the canvas and stencils flat on the ground. If you spray while the banner is hanging, then you may get drips and blur in unintentional places.
Spray black spray paint over the stencils to create the stencil graffiti effect. It's ok to spray past the stencil edges, it's part of the look & beauty of this craft! If you feel you have too much black, spray over portions with close bursts of brighter colored paint.

Next, add your embellishments. You have total freedom when it comes to what you glue or pin to the backdrop. I went with a selection of Jumbo Silver Studded Adhesive Jewels, Custom Photo Buttons, Silver Adhesive Studded Jewels, and Crown Charms secured using Gold Charm Pins and Artist Safety Pins.
Then I used punk pins to attach zippers and Nylon Black Chain. I even glued on some Picked Personalized Guitar Picks.

Hang your canvas banner backdrop onto a command strip hook using a large Silvertone Oval Chain. This DIY canvas was a fun and authentic way to add graffiti and stencil art to the bar backdrop, giving a true punk vibe.
