Begin making your clay balloon dog by breaking off a small bit of clay in your choice of color(s) and then rolling it into two small balls about a half-inch in diameter. Next, roll one of the balls back and forth with your hands to make a long snake-like piece roughly 4" in length. Using an exacto knife, cut a piece of clay about 1" to 1 1/2" long. Bend the piece in half to create the balloon dog's front legs. Repeat this step to create the dog's back legs. Gently press the clay together at the top to join the two ends together.

Next, cut another 1" piece of clay from your initial longer piece to form the dog's body. Press both the front and back legs against the ends of the body to join them together.

To form the dog's ears, repeat the first step using a slightly shorter piece of clay, roughly 1/2" in length to start. Bend the piece in half and press the two ends together to form a loop.

Cut a small section of your remaining snake-like piece and roll into a tiny ball to form your dog's head, and then press the ears behind the ball to join them together. The remaining bit of clay will become the dog's tail. Gently press the head to the front legs until they stick together and the tail to the back legs.

Once you've created the number of balloon dogs needed for your party, trim bamboo skewers down to about 3 inches and gently insert one end into the middle section of your balloon dogs. Place the balloon dogs on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake in a pre-heated oven at 230 degrees for 30 minutes. Allow the balloon dogs to cool then insert into your cupcakes and serve to your guests!
