The unicorn trend is still going strong and you can't help but get caught up in it. I know my daughter is still obsessing over anything and everything unicorn. Gallery walls are a great way to make your child's personality come to life. You can add in personal mementos, favorite colors, drawings and anything that represents your child's personality.
The first order of business is to decide on your theme and color palette. From the moment I saw the DIY Ceramic Unicorn Head, I knew I had to create an entire gallery wall around it. Theme: check! I love working with black, white, and pastel colors and knew that would be perfect in my daughter's room. Color palette: check!
Now that we have a theme and a color palette, the key to a successful gallery wall is mixing media. To add visual interest we mixed in a DIY wooden sign, DIY canvas artwork, lights, ceramics, and a free printable. When working with a gallery wall, try to design in odd numbers. Our gallery wall has five different elements.
Our first element is our DIY Light-Up Wooden Sign. These Marquee Light-Up Letter Kits are an easy way to add your child's first initial, age, favorite number, or even a fun symbol. Adding in personal touches like your child's initial is really what gallery walls are all about. They should be a representation of your style and personality. For full instructions check out the step-by-step tutorial.
Next, we created this simple watercolor canvas art. Simply grab a Fredrix Archival Watercolor Stretched Canvas in a 12" x 12" square and paint it in your favorite colors. We just diluted some regular craft paint and used a couple of brushes from the Plaid Paintbrush Super Value Pack. Once your paint has dried fully add a quote or your choice. We went with an obligatory magical quote. To add even more dimension and whimsy, we painted a few DIY Unfinished Wood Stars and glittered them with Ranger Stickles Metallic Glitter Glue Set in the Platinum color. You can add them with a glue dot or for a more permanent solution, use a Surebonder Low-Temperature Mini Glue Gun.
The Black Light-Up Love Marquee Sign was the next addition to our unicorn gallery wall. I mean who doesn't LOVE unicorns, right!? It was just the perfect size and a sweet addition. Plus, we are all about spreading as much love as possible and adding these simple reminders throughout your decor is the way to go. When this sign lights up, it has a beautiful purple hue too.
Finally, it's time to showcase the DIY Ceramic Unicorn Head. This was the inspiration for our gallery wall. Using water downed craft paint and a few small brushes from the Plaid Paintbrush Super Value Pack, paint your unicorn head. We painted the mane in our pink, purple, and teal color palette. You can also highlight the mouth, nostrils, eyes, and ears with paint to make them stand out. Once all the paint was dry, we added some Mod Podge® and some Gold Glitter to the horn. After the Mod Podge® has dried, apply a second coat to seal in all the glitter. We also added an eyeball using the Ranger Stickles Metallic Glitter Glue Set in the Black Diamond color. We love how this turned out and really ties everything together.
Lastly, using a DIY Unfinished Wood Artwork Hanger add any complimentary print. This is a great piece to be able to quickly and effortless swap out artwork. If you'd like to use our Free "Dream Like a Unicorn Print" Printable, make sure you download it. We are offering this in two background colors, either black or white.
Hopefully, this has inspired you to create your own Unicorn Gallery Wall. We love how this turned out and we will be on the lookout to add additional items to this magical wall.
Pro Tip: The nice thing about decorating is that our styles and tastes are always changing. Don't put a ton of holes in your wall, use the click together Command Strips or use a Command Hook like we did. We did work around an existing decorative knob to hang up our DIY Light-Up Wooden Sign, which was the perfect fit.
