In the midst of making so many big decisions, seeing your future husband trying on tuxes can help you see the light at the end of tunnel, or in the case, the end of the aisle. Dressing the groom often becomes one of the bride’s favorite parts of planning the wedding. Take our word for it, if you are feeling in over your head with everything else, take Hubby Hunkerson to the tux shop to calm your nerves. Have fun and follow our tips for choosing groom attire that will keep your man comfortable and stylish all day.
4 Tips for Dressing the Groom:
1. Dress for the occasion. The groom’s attire should coordinate with your wedding dress and the style of the wedding.
- Formal - tuxedo or dark suit
- Semiformal - dark suit
- Daytime or Outdoor - light suit
2. Dress for his body type. While his options are far less complicated than yours were, your groom should certainly try on styles until he finds the one that feels best. Remember when picking out groomsmen wedding attire that One Size Does Not Fit All. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
- Tall and thin - double-breasted jacket adds volume
- Tall and broad - shawl collar is slimming
- Short and thin - two- or three-button single-breasted jacket
- Short and broad - two-or one-button jacket single-breasted jacket with shawl collar
- Large waist - vest instead of cummerbund
3. Tailor to perfection. Whether you are buying or renting, you should shop for the groom’s tuxedo and groomsmen attire 6 months before the wedding. Tuxedo Options:
- Off-the-rack tuxedos and suits will likely need pants hemmed and sleeves shortened.
- Made-to-measure tuxedos and suits are partially customized. They begin with a pattern that is adjusted to your groom’s measurements.
- If you are planning in the land of an endless wedding budget, check out some of the online custom suit sites. House of Bespoke, for example, offers fully custom suits with a price tag to match. {Ooh, la la! If only all men could afford custom suits…}
- Rental tuxes cannot, other than to be sometimes hemmed, be altered. So, again, be sure to try on until you find the best fitting tux, even if it is not the one you like best in pictures or on Pinterest. It’ll be the one in your pictures, and that’s what matters most.
4. Personalize with accessories. Give your groom some room to show his personality. Accessories are a simple way to help him stand apart from his groomsmen. After all, he’s the one with the beautiful bride at the end of the night.
- Stand out from groomsmen with a vest and tie in different color or texture.
- Pick a patterned tie and matching pocket square.
- Add personality with cuff links and socks.
- Surprise him with a fun groom gift like these "I'm With the Groom" Can Coolers to use leading up to wedding or as a groom’s photo prop to be used after all professional photographs have wrapped up. He’ll love your extra attention to detail on his behalf.
