Treasure Hunt VBS Game Ideas

Treasure Hunt VBS Game Ideas

Vacation Bible School games are a great way to help kids explore creativity and work on teamwork and friendship skills, all while learning lessons about God's love and the treasures He has created for us. These games are perfect for large or small groups, and can be adapted for indoors or out.

Goal: To be the first team to dig up all of the crosses from their "treasure site." Fill small wading pools or sand boxes with sand and bury one cross per team member in each "treasure site." Divide the students into two teams. Have teams line up about 20-25 feet away from the "treasure sites."

On go, one student from each team runs to their team's "treasure site," uses the scoop to find one cross and runs back to their team. Once a team member returns, the next student runs to find another cross. The first team to collect all of the crosses from their "treasure site" wins the game.

Animals of the Jungle Along the Treasure Path

If you were searching for a treasure in the jungle or rainforest, you would probably see lots of animals along the way. Each of these wonderful creatures were created by God. Create a list of animals that may be seen when searching for the treasure. Write the list on a piece of paper and hang where all the students can see the list.

Place the names of animals that live in the jungle or rainforest in a hat (use a safari hat if one is available). Divide the classroom into as even of teams as possible with a minimum of 3 people per team. The object of the game is to have someone from one of the other teams guess the correct animal being drawn. Select a team member to pick a name out of the hat.

One person on the team tries to draw the animal on a classroom board or a piece of paper hung on the wall. The first person gets 30 seconds to draw. If one of the other teams does not guess the correct animal, a second person from the team continues to draw for another 30 seconds. Allow up to 3 players from a team to draw in 30-second intervals. If a team is able to guess the animal, the team that was drawing gets a point. If a team was unable to guess the animal, the team or teams not drawing each get a point. Play to 10 points or for a given amount of time.

Find or purchase a smaller smooth rock for each student. If you are near a beach or a park, these may be good places to find rocks to use. Allow students to select the paint color they wish to paint their rocks. (Note: Bright colors work best for this activity.) Have students paint one side of the stone. Set aside to dry. Once dry, have students paint the other side and set aside to dry.

Discuss some phrases or things to write on the rocks that spread kindness and make people smile. Phrases may include "You make me smile," "Luv Ya," "You Got This," "Stay Strong," "Smile," and "Be You." Write these phrases somewhere for all of the children to see. For younger children, have them tell you what they want you to write on their rocks. Use permanent markers to write the children's selected kindness messages on their rocks. Older children may use permanent markers to write their own selected kindness messages.

Take a walk around the neighborhood. Allow students to put their "jewels" where someone will find them. There's no greater feeling than knowing you have added some positivity and a smile to the life of a stranger. The people finding the rocks will feel like they've found a treasure.

No VBS is complete without some fun games. With just a few simple supplies and a little prep time, you can create your own VBS games that help kids focus on God's treasures while having tons of fun.
