Tartan and Tulle Winter Wedding

Tartan and Tulle Winter Wedding

Color is not the only way to create your wedding aesthetic. Prints & patterns can also be used to inspire your wedding design. Tartan or plaid are perfect for brightening up a winter wedding. As with all bold patterns, how you use them is key. Going against convention, I mixed several plaids. Using plaids in the same color family and anchoring with neutrals & natural elements was key to pulling off this look. I also paired the plaid with beautiful, feminine tulle. Tulle gives plaid a versatile look that can be used throughout the year, not just over the holiday time frame. Here are my tips on tying together plaids to create a beautiful wedding reception.

Creating a Cozy Setting

Just as plaid is the perfect pattern to bring a warm and cozy feel to a wedding, so to is a fireside setting. Incorporate tartans into the fireplace setting, lay a fur or sheepskin in the hearth and add wool tartan cushions for depth & texture.

Birch logs look fantastic in the hearth. Make them unique by gluing circular cuts from Buffalo Plaid Beverage Napkins and Buffalo Plaid Favor Containers.

A Slice of Plaid

On the cake table I used a throw of plaid fabric over a neutral black tablecloth. Ontop of the table, natural accents such as Faux Mountain Grass Sprays, Faux Pine Branches and Mini Pinecones. These contrast with the glamorous Acrylic Crystal Bead Pedestal Candle Holders I sprayed gold and the gold cake stand.

Grossgrain ribbon in a check print adds the perfect amount of plaid to the wedding cake. A woodland cake topper also incorporates plaid with a tulle & thistle accent. A wintry feel and nod to the Scottish heritage of tartan.

Combine Rustic with Modern for an Elegant Table

Rather than covering the whole table in plaid, a natural woodgrain provides neutral balance to a classic black & white buffalo plaid table runner.

I used a simple & cost effective table centerpiece, a small bouquet of winter greens, berries, thistles tied with Black Tulle.

Nestled in the branches I placed a Pinecone Votive Holder.

At each side of the centerpiece and at each end of the table I added candle holders sprayed gold with forest green taper candles. Colored candles are a wedding trend I'm seeing more and more lately.

Next to the taper candles, Gold-Flecked Mercury Votive Holders and a wood cut which holds a Large Cylinder Glass Vase. Adding tartan details to vases is another way of subtlety incorporating pattern. The ribbon I chose includes the colors of each tartan used at the reception which helps tie the different patterns together.

Gold Mirror Table Numbers keep the rustic look fresh and modern.

A Plaid Place Setting

Natural wood pairs beautifully with tartans & plaids. Each place setting has a Wood Large Round Centerpiece as a charger which can be seen through the modern transparent Premium Clear Plastic Dinner Plate.

The plaid accents on each place setting are subtle to offset the bold statement runner. I wrapped the plaid ribbon around each plate. On top of this I added an elegant Premium White with Gold Ornate Plastic Dessert Plate.

I used my Cricut to create a monogram that I applied to each plate. Above the monogram I added a gold painted Antler Table Tosser and a thistle, both help accentuate the Scottish highlands look & feel of tartan.

The plaid ribbon has a red stripe within the pattern. This allowed me to be able to bring this red into the setting further using red buffalo check napkins, a fun pop of color for the setting.

The Clear Patterned Champagne Flutes have a cut crystal look that works perfectly with tartan. I placed these on Small Unfinished Wood Slices to bring another natural element to the setting.

I used the Premium Clear Crystal Plastic Wine Glasses for the same reason, adding modern gold mirror drink discs from Studio Noel on each glass. These double as place cards and tie in perfectly with the modern table numbers.

I used a bar cart for the whiskey bar. Throwing a Christmas Plaid Cotton Tablecloth over the handle to incorporate a bright pop of plaid. This pattern has the greens, blacks & white from the other plaid patterns and more of the red found in the buffalo pattern I used for the Whiskey bar.

I also offered small bottles of whiskey "wee drams" in Scotland in Buffalo Plaid Favor Containers. I added "Slante" which means "Cheers" in Scotland to each bag.
