My students are so interested in bugs! After reading LOTS of books to find out more about different types of bugs, we decided to learn more about bugs; from their perspective! We started by learning about how bugs and different insects use camouflage to help protect themselves. I brought in some fabric scraps and my students started working on hiding the bugs from the Just Buggy Bugs set.
Young children are so fascinated with all things creepy crawly! My students are no exception, so we decided to study our favorite bugs a little bit more!
My students quickly found out that they needed to study the patterns on both the Just Buggy Bugs and the fabric scraps to find the best camouflage for them. Some of the bugs proved very difficult to find! We then played several rounds of Creepy Crawly Bingo to help us learn more about different kinds of bugs. I chose a calling card from the set and before reading the name of the bug aloud to my students, I described it to them. They listened to my description and tried to guess which bug it was! After several student guesses, I showed them the card and they located that bug on their Bingo card.
We just so happened to be introducing story problems during this time, so to engage my students in learning about addition and subtraction, I asked each of them to create either an addition or subtraction type story problem so that other students could work on solving them. I typed up each problem and my students used the Bug Stampers to show how they solved the problems.
There are a variety of different bugs included in the stamp set, so finding bugs that interested everyone was easy! Finally, to wrap up our study, my students each researched a bug that they were most interested in and wrote down some fun facts about it. They then donned these fun Bug Masks to share their learning! Having the Bug Masks on helped us to see things from a bug's perspective rather than our human one!
We learned lots about bugs and I think my students are even more excited about bugs now!
