Through my teaching of the states and capitals we typically started with the region we live in. This allows my students to have a background knowledge and interest in the area. However, you can decide which region you want to start with when teaching this skill. This is the order in which I teach my students: Southwest, Southeast, Northeast, Midwest and West. You will love how the free States Quizzes are broken down by region allowing students to grow and master their learning.

States and Capitals Activities

I have searched for ways to have my students show mastery, locate, and learn the states and capitals. I discovered the best way to engage and help my students was to break it down by region. Students learn in chunks and this is a great method to help them. Let me share some activities that work for me and are sure to help you have success with your students growth in Social Studies.

A great way to teach the States and Capitals is to start out by using the Color Your Own "All About the United States" Posters. These are great because you can focus on a region by studying and labeling the states. These large maps are perfect for students to use independently or with partners. They are able to color, label, and study while learning. I love having my poster complete, so students can refer to it for guidance if needed. Keeping it displayed in a visible area will help students identity which area we will be working on.

Another fun activity I like incorporating into our learning is playing the States BINGO. This is a great motivator to use as a positive reward when we master learning a region of the U.S. You'll find that kids work hard for something like this. The funny thing is, they don't realize they're actually doing some learning while playing this fun game!

Kids love hands-on activities and one thing that is fun to use are these State & Capitals Matching Puzzles. You can separate them and use only the regions you are focusing on or you can allow the students to use them all. These puzzles are great because they are self-checking and it's a great way to keep your students engaged and learning.

Lastly, as your students are growing and learning you will want to incorporate these Free States and States Quizzes. This is an easy way to track your students' understanding and identify the areas where they need additional support. I have broken the quizzes down by the 5 Regions: Midwest, West, Southwest, Northeast, and Southeast. It is great to give the students the quizzes after you have focused on one particular region for a period of time.
