“Do or do not. There is no try…” when it comes to creating the best trunk for this year’s Trunk or Treat! Chewbacca, pool noodle light sabers and a death star lantern are among the lineup for this Star Wars themed trunk. Keep reading to find out how to create these Star Wars inspired trunk decorations.

Start by placing a black table skirt around the bumper of your trunk. Decorate the black table skirt with storm trooper bulletin board cutouts. Next, create the lighted millennium falcon window out of a black tri fold project board. Find the middle of the board, use a paint brush and white acrylic paint to make straight lines coming from the middle area. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfect because then you will take chrome duct tape to make lines that resemble the millennium falcon window during light speed. Place the board in the trunk to make it the backdrop. Hang gold glitter star garland from the sides of the open trunk.

A TIE Fighter Lantern is a must in this Star Wars themed trunk. Look at a photo of a TIE fighter for reference. Cut wing shapes from cardboard and paint them with black acrylic paint. After the wings are dry, create the wing design with chrome duct tape. Hot glue the wings to the sides of a silver paper lantern. Draw on the TIE fighter details with a pencil, then fill in with black paint. Now hang the TIE fighter with fishing line in the right corner of your trunk.

To create the Death Star lantern that hangs in the right corner of the trunk, paint circles and the middle part of the death star onto a paper lantern with black acrylic paint and a flat-bristled paintbrush. When the paint is dry, draw on the sections of the Death Star with a black sharpie marker. Hang it on the trunk door with fishing line.

Let’s not forget about light sabers. Create the light saber out of a pool noodle. Simply cover the pool noodle ends with silver duct tape, then take black duct tape and put a strip on the end of the pool noodle and a strip where the silver duct tape ends to create clean lines. Take orange adhesive foam sheets and cut out a small oval and a small square, adhere them onto the silver duct tape. Place the light saber on the top of the Millennium Falcon Window.

Now it is time to create the Star Wars banner. Glue the Star Wars bulletin board letters to a black canvas banner and hang it from the trunk. Last but not least, take a black gossamer roll and spread it out into a walkway leading up to your trunk. Attach bulletin board letters to the walkway with hot glue to say “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away.” Tape the starry gossamer to the ground to secure it. Place the R2-D2 and C-3PO Cardboard standup and the Chewbacca stand-up around your trunk to add the final touch!

Have adults dress in a Darth Vader costume or a Princess Leia costume and hand out rolos, bubble wands, twizzlers or a candy assortment using a silver pail to store the goodies. Bring enough skeleton bags for each kid to have one to collect their treats! And now.. “May the force be with you.”
With potential social distancing measures in place with your trunk or treat this year, there are lots of ways to make trunk or treat fun and safe for everyone! Build stanchions to keep distance between cars and encourage social distancing. To make your own stanchions, fill galvanized pails with gravel. Place a garden stake in each pail and then slide a black craft noodle over each one. Finish your stanchions by pushing a foam pumpkin over the top of each garden stake. You can now tie plastic streamers from one stanchion to another to create dividers to use between cars or to mark social distancing areas. In addition, volunteers who are handing out candy can use grabbers to avoid picking up the candy and also wear Halloween themed face masks to help keep everyone safe. Remember to have some hand sanitizer available so it's easy for everyone to keep their hands clean.
