I love to incorporate a seasonal theme into reading as often as possible. Students LOVE a theme and become very excited even if we are relearning a skill previously taught.
Pin the Nose On the Snowman is a great way to get students up and moving! Write pairs of synonyms on individual carrot noses. Create two teams and have students race to create pairs of synonyms.
Another great way to get students up, moving, and practicing synonyms is to have students find a partner that has the matching synonym. This is a great way to assess who understands the concept and who may need a little reteaching. I created the snowmen using the Snowman Face Roll of Stickers! I wanted to add in a little craft snow at a literacy center! My students see snow frequently in Nebraska, but it is still fun to have it in our classroom! Using a Large Galvanized Pail, I added snowflake erasers and Snowman Face Bouncing Balls. On each bouncing ball, I wrote a synonym. Students will sort through the snow to find pairs of synonyms. The erasers will make a great reward for students after mastering our synonyms.
To add writing into our synonym lesson, students will create a cute, little snowman using the Snowman Face Stickers. Students will record a pair of synonyms on the body and then use the synonyms in a short, silly story.
And now it is time for a little craft fun! Using a DIY Bulletin Board Snowflake, cut colored paper to help make the snowflake pop! Students will then write pairs of synonyms on each section. Then, add a few dress-up snowman stickers. The snowflakes will make a great display.
