Reading in a Winter Wonderland

Reading in a Winter Wonderland

Our class reading corner goes through seasonal changes to inspire my young readers. It transports them to new places while they engage in their books. This small transformations has made a huge difference to the students I teach. They came in from Christmas break with wide eyes. The glittery snowflakes and whimsical icicles adorned the reading corner, they couldn’t wait to curl up with a good book!

With just a few changes you can update your reading corner to reflect the season or subject being studied. For the bulletin board, I layered an iridescent border on top of my existing one. This can be done by simply stapling in just a couple spots. I find it helpful for transitioning into new themes to always have a border that can be used for multiple seasons. Solid colors work really well. I have found that after Christmas sales are a great way to dress up a winter themed reading corner, just add some garland to the outer edge of your bulletin board. I stapled it right on top of my existing borders. Such a fun whimsical touch. I kept my existing background, the distressed wooden planks are so versatile. I added in a few icicle cutouts underneath the chevron burlap ribbon. To finish it off, I added some tissue snowflakes and blue snowflakes for some dimension and color. When decorating a reading corner you can't forget about the ceiling. I utilized inexpensive plastic snowflake ornaments, hanging them on fishing line from the ceiling and mixed them with some tissue snowflakes. I think this is my favorite part of the reading corner, my students love to lay on the carpet and look up at the snowflakes as they read. I had the students pitch in with the décor by creating book jackets of their favorite stories. You can take this a step further and turn it into a mini book report. The students assembled these adorable Mitten Craft Kits and added them onto their book jackets. I used my existing clothespins and covered them with some glitter tape, I used some doublestick tape to add a cardboard snowflake. I draped glitter icicles and snowflakes on shelves, ledges and the DIY tee pee giving the appearance of some fluffy fresh snow.   My students love to hold these fluffy snowballs as they read. Today's generation stays active and in constant motion, so my having something to hold they are able to channel that busyness and focus on their reading. and here it is the finished product a Winter readingland.... Now what transformation will spring bring???
