The Lord is My Shepherd Lesson and Craft

The Lord is My Shepherd Lesson and Craft

Psalm 23 is such a beautiful picture of God's tender love and care for us as His children. This Sunday school lesson is full of fun as students learn the important truth about how the Lord is our Shepherd. For this lesson, you'll start with an easy and fun backdrop, add in a surprise bag hidden in the large sheep, and then enjoy Shirley the Sheep's favorite book along with a hands-on craft!

A mini room transformation can help to engage students as soon as they enter the room! So for this Psalm 23 lesson I wanted to create the feeling of a sheep pasture. To do this I put Light Blue Bulletin Board Paper on the wall to look like the sky. I cut the top edge of Nile Green Bulletin Board Paper so that it would look like a grassy area and taped this onto the bottom of the blue paper. I then put some of the green paper onto the table. It took me less than 10 minutes to make the backdrop! I also assembled and put the Nativity Lamb Paper Box onto the table. Since it's made to be a costume, the size makes it quite the show stopper which is a perfect way to get student's interest piqued about the lesson!

To add even more excitement, I put two special surprises into a large tote bag--a stuffed animal sheep and the book Found by Sally Lloyd-Jones and Jago.

I hid the bag in the middle of the sheep until our lesson began!

Once you have everything set up and the kids have arrived, you will start the lesson by telling the students that a special guest has come to Sunday School today! Tell them that the special guest is going to help us learn an important truth about Jesus. Have a student come up and pull out the bag hidden inside of the large sheep to reveal the stuffed animal sheep and book!

Introduce the students to Shirley the Sheep! Tell them that she is so excited to be here and that she has brought along her favorite book Found. This book is a beautiful retelling of Psalm 23. Read it to the class and discuss how the Lord is our shepherd--He loves us and always takes care of us.

Then, have the students create the Psalm 23 Shepherd's Staff Craft Kit. The kits are individually packaged with all of the supplies each student will need to make the craft and each of the pieces are self-adhesive. You will have little prep and little mess for this craft! I like that the shepherd's staff includes the first three verses of Psalm 23, so you can also use this as their memory verse to learn!
