Preparing for a Student Teacher

Preparing for a Student Teacher

Are you getting ready to have a student teacher in your classroom this year? If so, make sure the future teacher is set up for success by providing a few must-have materials. A little bit of prep from the experienced teacher will help the up-and-coming teacher feel right at home in the classroom. Make sure to grab the free printable Student Teacher Send Off Booklet for students to create for as gift!

First, grab a Happy Planner 12-Month Undated Mini Planner and Washi Tape for the future teacher. I like to print out the school calendar and add any other important dates that I already know about to the calendar. This will allow the student teacher to add in those dates immediately in his or her own planner so there won't be any surprises!

Teachers need ALL the materials possible! Set up a Burlap Storage Caddy for the future teacher with Mr. Sketch Markers, Sharpies, Black Expo Markers, Bright Index Cards, Washi Tape, Apple-Shaped Sticky Notes, Quick Flip Questions, scissors, and pencils. This will guarantee that your student teachers has all materials needed no matter where they are in the classroom! Now that your student teacher is set up with all the initial important materials, he or she will need a Desktop Stand with Dry Erase Board. This board is the perfect size to fit on any table or floor to help with small group instruction. I love how it folds up nicely to store or carry!

Storage & Management

Paper storage in the classroom can be a tricky task to manage. Help your student teacher stay organized with this Storage Studios Easy Access Paper Holder. This will be the perfect place for the student teacher to keep lesson plans and copies. The Storage Studios Easy Paper Holder has three separate sections and is made out of strong plastic. I love that the dividers do not move! Staying on track with time is crucial to all classrooms, so help your student teacher learn to manage time by using a Jumbo Red Classroom Timer. This timer is large enough of students to see at a distance too.

I also like to make sure my student teacher has rewards to hand out to students! It is important that he or she is a part of the classroom community right away. One of my favorite rewards to give are laminated bookmarks. I love that students feel like it is a "prize," yet is useful to them on a daily basis in the classroom. The Bright Pineapple Erasers are also always a hit!

Send Off Booklet

I like to send off my student teacher with a student written booklet to help them remember their time spent in our classroom! Download and print out the free printable booklet here. Students can then fill out one of the writing options provided. This is a great time for them to give the teacher advice or to share things that they've loved! I like to laminate my cover and bind the booklet together using Happy Planner Mini Discs and  a Happy Planner Classic Punch. You could also use a regular binding machine or just staple! This gift serves as a great reminder of the student teacher's awesome experiences in your classroom.
