Playing Dress Up

Playing Dress Up

When I moved to PreK one of the centers I couldn’t wait to establish was the Dramatic Play center. I just knew my kids were going to love it and I was right! They beg their friends to hurry so they can have a turn. I found these fabulous vests and hats that my kiddos love to use.

My husband made me the best coat rack for all of our costumes. I was afraid that if they all were in a dress-up chest; they would get ruined. He had a solution, a coat rack with pegs is perfect for little hands. All of our vests and hats hang on the coat rack, waiting to be played with. One of my favorite things to do during center time is to listen in on their little dramatic play time. You don't know what is going to come out of their mouths. Right after we learned about Fire Safety, they would don the Firefighter Vest, and go around the room and "teach" the other kids how to Stop, Drop, and Roll. Or sing the "Get Out, Stay Out" song to their friends. I can't count how many times they will pop over to my table with the Kids Police Vest and announce "Hi! I am Officer Hofficer!" During Community Helpers week, we have someone put on the vest as we learned about their profession. When we learned about Mail Carriers, I would have little letters being delivered all during center time by kiddos in Mail Carrier Vests and Mail Carrier Hats. The kids at our writing center would write letters, and the mail carriers would deliver. My favorite part of dramatic play is the little mommies and daddies I have in my room. I found my old baby dolls at my grandparents and brought them into the room. They just love to rock and pat the babies backs, wrap them up and put them to bed. It is too cute when they are rocking their babies in their Kids Police Vest or Firefighter Vest. I recently added a stethoscope and some blood pressure cuffs into the dramatic play. They love checking for their friend's heart beats. Our principal came in the other day, and was diagnosed with some tragic illness, prescribed medicine and a shot! I love how their little imaginations are working in overdrive. All I supplied were vests, a couple of hats, and a few props, and they can be whatever they want to be. They can do whatever they want, the options are as endless as their imagination!
