I have always found that fresh air and sunshine can do amazing things for children! Give me a sunny day, and I’ll give you an outdoor lesson! Flying disc golf with math facts is the perfect way to practice important math skills while playing outside! This activity is ideal for developing math fluency and getting children moving!
To get started, make Fact Flying Discs that fit what you are teaching. You could do addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division! You need to put a fact on each flying disc that you will use for the game. I printed my facts on labels, but you could also write them on the discs using permanent markers. Once your flying discs are ready, choose a location to play! We love to take this game outside, but you can also play inside if it's rainy or cold. Whenever we play a game, I like to play students versus the teacher. Since the children are all on one team, it encourages them to work cooperatively. I choose two score keepers- one will keep score for the kids, and the other will keep score for the teacher. My score keepers are the "busiest" kids in my classroom, because this will give them a job for the whole game. The score keepers each need a dry erase paddle and marker.
To play the game, each child gets a turn to pick a flying disc and solve the fact. You could allow your students to use the dry erase paddles and markers if they need to draw or write to figure out the answer. When the child gets the correct answer, he or she tries to throw the disc into the flying disc golf set. If the student scores, the kids get a point. If the student misses, the teacher gets a point. Continue playing until each child has had at least one turn.
When you're finished, just collect the flying discs and bring in the golf set. You could reward your students if they win or just play for fun! You can be sure that your kids will be asking to play this game again and again!
