Organizing Your Small Group Reading Area

Organizing Your Small Group Reading Area

As a teacher, it is imperative to have everything at your finger tips. Time is limited throughout the day, so it is critical we are organized to maximize instruction. And it is no different for small group reading instruction. I am incredibly happy to share my “Happy Reading” cart, a place which houses all of my reading tools.

Small Group Reading Organization First of all, I bought a creme colored rolling cart and used copper spray paint to customize it a bit. Check out this Emerald Green a La Cart Crafting Cart or Burnt Ash a La Cart Crafting Cart for some other fun cart color options!

After I spray painted the cart copper, I added some stickers. These letter stickers say "Happy Reading". I really love the white contrast against the copper. small group reading organization Then came fun part came, the organizing! I used clear plastic jars which came in different sizes. I loved that I could find the perfect size for the right supply. Since the jars are the same except the sizes, they create a very uniformed, organized look. I include highlighter tape, highlighter sentence strips, pencils, dry erase markers, scissors, popsicle sticks, highlighters, and stopwatches in the jars. On the cart I include my Guided Reading Binder, small station games, stamps, index cards, sentence strips, dry erase boards, and a pretty fake plant because, why not?

small group reading organization I also used a sonic drink holder to hold the tall plastic jars. I painted the drink holder pink because I wanted to bring out the pink in the copper. The drink holder is the perfect size for the tall plastic jars. Four fit perfectly. small group reading organization And here is a little tip for all your guided reading books: use a rolling crate to store the weekly books. If your campus has a "literacy library" (a space where the leveled books are kept), you can keep those books in a rolling crate for easy transportation back and forth to your classroom. And guess what? I spray painted my crate pink. But of course!
