Measuring Liquids in the Classroom

Measuring Liquids in the Classroom

Measuring liquid in the classroom can be challenging so I am always on the look for measuring resources that can make my life easier. It's important to find ways to help students see patterns between different measurements. The Gallon Measuring Set is a great tangible and visual example of the different liquid capacities. Here's how I used them in my own classroom. Be sure to download the Free Liquid Measuring Worksheet Printable here!

liquid measuringI wanted my students to be able to see the difference in water levels depending on what size container we were using. I added food coloring drops to each water container so they could verbally describe the plastic measuring container to me. The free measuring printable I created is a great worksheet to accompany the measuring lesson so the students can take notes as they are exploring the different capacities.liquid measuringDownload the Free Liquid Measuring Printable here! One of the most valuable concepts for the students to grasp is that the same amount of liquid can be described or labeled in different ways. Example: 2 cups can also be described as 16 oz. For this demonstration, I placed the containers next to each other and wrote the equation on the sentence strip to show that they were equal.liquid measuringTo prove that this was true, we poured the liquid into Clear Round Containers with Lids so they could see that the containers held the same amount of liquid.liquid measuringSeeing them placed side by side in the same Clear Containers was a power visual to show that two cups is the same as 16 oz. We repeated this by comparing different measurements in the clear containers to see which held more or less liquid. On the printable I included different types of measurement on the same container so it could reinforce this concept as well. liquid measuringDownload the Free Printable so you can use it with your class and easily teach the concept of measurement!
