Managing Puzzle Storage

Managing Puzzle Storage

All my years teaching have been in a Pre-K or Kindergarten classroom. As a result, I've learned to love using puzzles! My students like playing with them too but it was almost inevitable that I would find random puzzle pieces on the carpet. For awhile I had a big bucket where I collected all those pieces, but it was overflowing! This year, I found a new way to manage and store my puzzles and it makes life so much easier! Here's how I did it.

I always stacked my puzzles, but they were a hot mess. They would fall over, pieces would fall out, and it was just overall unorganized! I got these Stackable Bins (which fit perfectly in my Ikea storage unit!) and each puzzle had its own home. Now the kids can see which puzzle they are getting out. When they are done, there is a clear place for it to go. After I got the storage system down, I needed a way to keep the pieces organized so that four-year-olds could keep the puzzles in the right place! Each puzzle piece and puzzle has a colored shape. I traced out each puzzle piece spot on the board, so that the kids could see where the pieces go. In each "puzzle spot" I also drew the corresponding shape. Although the mess of all the puzzles being out at once has cut down tremendously, I still get one or two puzzles on the floor at the same time. Now the kids can match the correct puzzle pieces to the correct puzzle. They can tell which puzzle has the pink circle and which puzzle has the blue square. With this new storage system in place Mrs. Hoffer isn't spending all of her extra time doing puzzles!
