Kindness is cool anytime of year! We started a Kindness is Cool project in our school this year. Students or teachers (and even parents!) who see someone doing a kind act for another person or people are encouraged to write those kind things down and place them in the kindness box in the office. Every few days, those acts of kindness are read aloud during morning announcements so that everyone can hear the kindness taking place in our school. My Kindergarten students decided to take our notes of kindness one step further. We created Kindness Hearts!
To make your Kindness Hearts, you will first need to bend the chenille stem in half to create a "v" shape. This will be the bottom of the heart. Add some Opaque Pony Beads to each side. This will add color and give little hands a place to hold the yarn in place.
Next, bend the open sides of the chenille stem together to form a heart shape. Twist the ends together and spread the Opaque Pony Beads out along the chenille stem.
Finally, add the Neon Yarn. I like to tie my Neon Yarn to the bottom of the heart shape; in the "v" or at the top, where the chenille stems are twisted together. Wrap the yarn around the heart as many times as you'd like, using the beads to help hold the yarn in place. Make sure you wrap the yarn tightly, but not tightly enough that you lose the heart shape. I usually use about 1 yard of yarn per heart.
Our finished hearts look like this! We give them out to anyone in our school that we see doing a kind act for someone else. We also supplied each classroom teacher with some hearts to give out to students who are being kind to another student. Our front office area also houses a big basket of hearts, so that anyone can walk by and get more hearts if they need them to give out. By handing out these hearts to others, we hope to help the person who did the kind act remember how they felt when being kind, but also to encourage others to be kind as well.
