Harry Potter Inspired Trunk or Treat Idea

Harry Potter Inspired Trunk or Treat Idea

Overall Trunk or Treat

Create the backdrop for the trunk by lining it with brick paper. Use burlap fabric on top of the trunk and tie it together where the trunk ends on each side with jute cording. Then cut the burlap into strips on the ends so that they flap in the wind on each side of the trunk. Take the large, fuzzy spider and place it on the corner of the trunk. Tie it in place with jute cording so that it is secure. Spider webs are a must when you have a spider that large! Stretch the spider webs across the burlap to add a creepy touch.

Now to add the Hogwarts House banner, cut a navy blue, shiny red metallic, metallic gold, and green tablecloth into sizeable strips. Make sure that when the strips are next to each other they are the same length as the trunk. Then cut the bottom of the tablecloth strips into fishtails by cutting a triangle out of the middle. Secure the strips onto the back bumper with glue dots or tape to act as a banner that hangs down to the ground. To make the banner that says "HOGWARTS," download and print the Free Hogwarts Letter Template here! Cut out the letters and place them behind the burlap banner. Then trace the letters with a black Sharpie® onto the burlap. Fill in the traced letters with black acrylic paint using a flat bristle paint brush.

The kids will think you are a wizard when they see your trunk's floating candles. Make the floating candles by using hot glue to create drips on white craft tubes or a pool noodle cut up into candle height pieces with battery operated candles inside. See this craft tube candles project for more directions on how to make spooky drips and lighting. Paint the craft tubes white. Add fishing line to a drop of hot glue on the top of the "candles" and hang from your trunk so that the candles will "float."

Hop on your broomstick and play a game of Quidditch! Well...maybe just craft Quidditch hoops instead. You can make the décor piece with embroidery hoops, a wood planter, bottle corks and a few other items. See how to make the Quidditch Hoops here. Then, place the set in the left corner of your trunk.

For the final details of the Harry Potter Trunk or Treat Decorations, add in a white birdcage filled with owls, twigs and leaves. Then place the birdcage on top of a vintage suitcase, gold suitcase and a black suitcase.

Dressing up on Halloween is fun for adults too and it really makes the theme that much better! Use the Harry Potter Costume and broom to make your magical trunk come alive. Hand out lightning bolt tattoos, wizard wands, wizard glasses, broom pens, spider rings and snitches (gold chocolate balls). Bring black cauldrons and skeleton tote bags to hold all the treats for your Harry Potter loving guests. Grab your wand and get started creating your magical trunk.

Although social distancing measures may be in place for your trunk or treat this year, there are still lots of ways to make trunk or treat fun and safe for everyone! Build stanchions to keep distance between cars and encourage social distancing. To make your own stanchions, fill galvanized pails with gravel. Place a garden stake in each pail and then slide a black craft noodle over each one. Finish your stanchions by pushing a foam pumpkin over the top of each garden stake. You can now tie plastic streamers from one stanchion to another to create dividers to use between cars or to mark social distancing areas. In addition, volunteers who are handing out candy can use grabbers to avoid picking up the candy and also wear Halloween themed face masks to help keep everyone safe. Remember to have some hand sanitizer available so it's easy for everyone to keep their hands clean.
