I love to incorporate as many hands-on opportunities in math as possible for my students. Math needs to be engaging for students to fully comprehend the skill and to be able to explain the “why” behind the lesson. Teaching students the concept of symmetry is a great time to add in multiple hands-on opportunities.
Activity 1 Students will love to roll a Geometric Shape Dice and then create the shape using a Geometry Peg Boards while making sure the shape is symmetrical using the pegs as a guide. For students who have grasped the concept, attempt to have students show the symmetry with the shape and colors of each rubber band. For students who are still struggling with the concept, concentrate on just the shape. Activity 2
Geometric Rainbow Pattern Blocks are always a student favorite for indoor recess. Challenge students to use the shapes to create a symmetrical shape. For extra practice, have students say the name of each shape. Students could also practice counting how many sides and corners each shape has. For a collaboration activity, have students work together to create a symmetrical shape. Partner one will say the name of a shape and place it on "their" side of the board. Partner two will say the number of sides the shape has and place the exact same colored shape on "their" side of the board. Activity 3
Students will love to use their creativity while incorporating art into math. Have students create a symmetrical bug, monster, or any other formation they can think of using the Mosaic Geometric Self-Adhesive Shapes on top of black construction paper. Add accents using a white crayon. I hope I've shared a few ideas to help make teaching symmetry easier in your classroom.
