Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day

After the very long month of January, I get excited at the thought of Punxsutawney Phil not seeing his shadow! Even though Groundhog Day isn’t considered a public holiday, it is a great time to teach about hibernation and making predictions. And we all know that if a cute little animal is involved, students will be engaged & eager to learn all about the little guy!

Using the adorable plush mini groundhogs, I came up with two very simple craft ideas to help students learn all about hibernation. Hibernation Craft #1 Groundhog Day Students can create a tunnel for their groundhog using a Plush Mini Groundhog, craft roll, glue, and cotton balls. Students will use glue to add cotton balls to the outside of the craft roll. Then, add the super cute plush mini groundhog into his tunnel! Simple and easy. Hibernation Craft #2 Groundhog DayThis next craft takes a little cutting and stapling, but is also very simple. I used a large brown kraft bag, scissors, pencil, craft roll, cotton balls, and a plush groundhog. I cut off the top part of the bag and cut out a window for students to be able to see into. To create a tunnel for the groundhog, I stapled the craft roll to the bag on both sides. By stapling the bag, it allowed me to add cotton balls to the top of the bag without using any glue. I added accent pieces to his home by cutting the top part of the bag into smaller pieces. Students will love to read to their little groundhog friend in his home! Groundhog Day For a follow up writing activity, the Color Your Own "All About Groundhog Day" Poster and Groundhog Day Fact Bookmarks work great together. The bookmarks come in four designs that contain different facts on each. This would be a great time to pair students up and have them share the facts on their bookmark and complete the poster together.
