Mixing in games during math time is fun! Kids love games and what better way to review geometry than by creating a larger than life coordinate grid. Reviewing how to plot, name and identify points has never been so fun. Engage the students with this activity for test prep or as an informal assessment!
I am always looking for new and informal ways to assess my students. If I can find a way to avoid an assessment that involves paper and pencil I'm in. As we were wrapping up our geometry unit, I came up with a fun way to check my students' mastery of plotting points by having them create a larger than life coordinate grid using just a handful of items. First, I divided the students into groups of three and passed out a piece of this very durable Pacon® Super Value White Poster Board paper to each group along with one roll of tape from the Colorful Masking Tape Set.Each group started making their coordinate grid. They had to add numbers to their coordinate grid, label the origin and identify both the x and y axis.
I knew I wanted them to plot points on the grid using some foam stickers like the Fabulous Foam Self-Adhesive Transportation Shapes.
Some groups got pretty creative and used Yellow Washi Tape Set to make their tape look like a road.
It was so much fun walking around the room and seeing the collaboration in each group. I also loved hearing them use math vocabulary the entire time they were constructing their grids. Each group put several stickers on their grid so that we could hang them around the room and practice identifying points on each groups grid.
They walked around the room and wrote the coordinate pair on sticky notes next to the grids. They could not get enough of it! They were so engaged and on task the entire time. My students even asked if we could save a couple of the grids to show their parents at Open House. It's amazing what a little tape, some poster board and stickers can do to completely transform a math lesson!
