With a family of five it can be difficult to keep our daily and even monthly lives organized. Most of the time I am searching through piles of notes and flyers to keep track of what happens when. Pulling my hair out all the while! I needed a space, just one space that brought my family together. A space that with one glance, we all knew who would be where and what they would be doing.
I decided to create a simple family command center to help keep our family’s schedule organized. I also wanted a place for the kids to come home from school and hang their backpacks; all backpacks in one place so I can easily unload them, take out what I need and get them ready for the next day.
Step 1: Start by deciding what you would like to include at your family command center. What do you need to help you get in a better flow from week to week? I enjoy having a monthly calendar so that I can see what's to come. However, breaking each week down makes it less overwhelming for me. So, I've included both a monthly and weekly dry erase board. Step 2: After hanging the dry erase boards I added the hook rail for the backpacks and/or the kids coats/jackets. I plan to add a bench below the hook rail with storage for shoes and umbrellas. Step 3: Once you have the hook rail and dry erase boards positioned and hung, decide where you will place your family decal. These decals are super easy to apply to the wall. Step 4: Add the mini white pails to hold your dry erase Crayola® crayons and markers. I used some screw in cup hooks to hang the pails on the wall. I wasn't too sure about using the crayons on a dry erase board but they work awesome! They wipe clean with a damp cloth. These dry erase board ledge storage racks would also be a great addition to the wall. As I unload the kids' backpacks I could store all their important school paperwork in folders.
Hopefully with the help of this family command station, we will take our chaotic weekly routines and develop a healthy flow. What do you think of a family command station? How would having a "central command" help your family? This family command station along with my other household projects, such as the pegboard craft room storage idea and the DIY magnetic spice board, will help give you some creative storage ideas for the New Year!
