Get started by prepping your board. I love using the white shiplap fadeless paper as a background. It is perfect for many bulletin board ideas so it's a great background to leave up year round. Once its up you can add a few fringe place mats to the top of your board. I love how these have the look and feel of straw. The fun texture is a great fall addition. These are thin and very easy to staple to the top of the board. Now that the background and top are taken care of its time to add some border trim...the more the better. I like to staple a few colors and designs together to give a layered look. I staple these before adding them to my board that way they always line up nice and neat. I used a black scalloped border trim, combined with a polka dot pumpkin border. I added those two to an orange dotted border. Behind those I stapled the maze trim border and the burlap border together and stapled it all onto the wall surrounding my bulletin board.

My students' favorite part was introducing our class scarecrow. They worked together to stuff him with plastic bags so he would come to life. We talked about words that could describe our scarecrow as we stuffed him. The scarecrow was easily stapled to our bulletin board. It's light enough that you can staple the felt and fabric straight to the board.

Now for some crafty fun! My students worked on making their own silly scarecrows. We talked about various aspects of scarecrows such as why they're placed in fields and what it might be like if one came to life out in the field. What would the crows think? How would he act? This led to a very colorful discussion with lots of input and ideas. Before my students knew it they were already brainstorming their creative writing stories!

Once their scarecrows were made and we'd finished brainstorming I had my kids start their own narrative writing using the silly scarecrow writing prompt. Download teh prompt sheet for free here! While they wrote I added a few finishing touches onto our bulletin board. I included some black and white letters that spelled out the word "writing" onto a burlap banner. These stapled on easily and were a breeze to hang up.

As my students finished their writing they each made a crow using the Scarecrow Magnet Craft Kit. As they finished I hung their stories around the room along with their crows. You can easily add the magnet from the craft kit or hot glue to a clothespin, or staple the crows directly to your bulletin board. These make great additions to fall displays around your room.

Not all of our writing could fit on our bulletin board so we spread the silly scarecrows around the room. On our windows I paired this fun scarecrow sun catcher craft to brighten up the room. My class loves all the colors that shine through on a sunny day.
