When you’re in charge of a classroom of children, it’s important to be prepared for an emergency situation. At my school we’re required to have an emergency center by both of our doorways. I was tired of my center looking ugly and inefficient so I decided to give it a facelift. My school requires each center to have a classroom emergency flip chart, 3 copies of our class list and information on each student. Here’s how I transformed my emergency information center.
In case of an emergency, I would like to say that I will be calm and collected. But I know, that if that time were to ever come, I would be more focused on getting my students to safety than getting my emergency information together.
My classroom Emergency Center consists of the following items: Class list: I have a check off sheet with all my kiddos names. I have three copies in case I need to send one with police or EMS. Building Blueprint: I have a copy of our building blue print. It has all of the fire escape routes and tornado shelters clearly marked. This is particularly helpful in case a sub in my room and isn't familiar with the building during an emergency.
Information Page: You can download the helpful information page I created here. This sheet lists students' allergies or medical issues as well as how each student gets home at the end of the day. Again, this information is helpful in case I have a sub and an alternate pickup location has to be determined.
Emergency Information: This sheet has all of the students' emergency contact information listed on it; parent phone number, address, who can pick the child up, and emergency contact. You can download the emergency information sheet here. Information Package: Our district provides an information packet that has all the lock down procedures, fire and tornado procedures and emergency contact numbers. I just love having this at each of my doorways. I feel much more prepared in case of an emergency and feel comfortable knowing all necessary information is close at hand.
