Dr. Seuss™ Day Math

Dr. Seuss™ Day Math

When you think Dr. Seuss™ Day, reading and literacy usually come immediately to mind. But I've discovered there are also many fun ways to add some math into this special day! Graphing, stamping and sticking activities using Dr. Seuss™ books and classroom materials make this day extra special for everyone in the class.

We read a collection of our favorite Dr. Seuss books and then using the Dr. Seuss™ the Cat in The Hat™ Bulletin Board Cutouts and the Dr. Seuss™ Favorite Books Mini Bulletin Board Set, we graphed our favorite books! They smell great and were so easy for my students to practice their graphing skills. The stamps are double ended, so just alternating the ends they stamped with created an easy pattern. My students love color so they liked swapping the mini stampers with each other to create colorful patterns. There were so many of their favorite images on the stampers from Dr. Seuss's books. We used long strips of papers to stamp our patterns on, but as one of my students suggested, these would fit SO well inside the Ten Frame Stamp that we've used for math so often. Dr. Seuss Mini Stampers As part of our fun, we graph fish-shaped crackers each year. As an extension of that activity, we used the Dr. Seuss™ Fish Bulletin Board Accents and picked our favorite color fish! You can tell I have lots of red fish lovers in my room. We created our graph using the Graphing Pocket Chart and it was a quick way to incorporate those fun fish. Favorite Fish Color Graph Favorite Fish Color Graph Last but not least, we used the Dr. Seuss™ Cat in The Hat™ Mini Stickers to create more patterns. These mini stickers were great because they challenged many of my students who create AB patterns all the time. The stickers came in a variety of colors, but repeated the same images, so my students had to search to find the next sticker for their pattern, even if it wasn't the same color. Dr. Seuss Mini Stickers The patterns got very complex. There were patterns based on which way the cat's hat went and the cat's poses. I was impressed with the patterns that my students came up with! I hope you are now inspired to incorporate Dr. Seuss's world into your math lessons with these fun graphing techniques.
