Teaching With Weather Puppets and Weather Books: I find teaching with literature extremely effective in the classroom. I loved having my class sitting close and eagerly listening to me as I read a story. I feel kids can really focus and enjoy listening during story time. These Weather Wise Books by Capstone are the perfect way to introduce the concept of weather. While reading aloud, I let students share their own experiences with weather. The Weather Puppets can be used daily when talking about weather. Kids can sing a weather song and hold up the puppet that matches the current weather. Our favorite Weather jingle is: "What's the weather like today, we need to know so we can play! Is it rainy, is it snowy, Is it sunny or a cloudy day?"
Now let's get to another helpful tool to use when learning about weather. Weather charts and graphs!
Step 1: Using a ruler, draw a vertical and horizontal line down the middle of the paper plate, to create 4 quadrants.
Step 2: With good scissors, cut shapes out of adhesive foam to match the weather. We used white to create a cloud, blue for raindrops, and yellow for sunshine. I used foam snowflake shapes for the snow. Cut out a red arrow to go in the center of the weather chart.
Step 3: Glue the weather shapes on the paper plate. Place each weather symbol in a different quadrant as shown. With a Sharpie® Marker, write the corresponding weather words.
Step 4: Using a brad, attach the arrow to the center of the plate.
Step 5: Download the Free Weather Graph Printable here! I have included a blank one for you to add the different weather words in your region.
Now little ones can chart the weather! They will love to move the arrow each day to show the current weather. Let them keep track of the various weather conditions throughout the week. This is such a fun way to introduce and teach the concept of weather at home or school.
