Create a Makerspace Corner

Create a Makerspace Corner

Looking for a fun way to get your kids off their tablets? Create a makerspace corner and let their creativity flow! Makerspaces are special areas that promote learning through experimentation and play. These areas can be filled with many different items, tools or activities. Let me share with you how I created a makerspace corner for my kids to help encourage them to build, invent, design and experiment as they engage in the creative learning process.

Are you looking for a fun way to get your kids off their tablets? Create a makerspace corner and let their creativity flow! Makerspaces are special areas that promote learning through experimentation and play. These areas can be filled with many different items, tools or activities. Here's how I created a makerspace corner for my kids to help encourage them to build, invent, design and experiment as they engage in the creative learning process. These spaces are super easy to set up because you can use a lot of things around the house or your classroom like cardboard, popsicle sticks and toilet paper rolls. Add in some tape and you're pretty much good to go!

First, find the space for you little makers! Before you set out all your supplies, make sure to have a designated space where they can work! This limits the mess and serves as a place they can go to throughout the day whenever they feel the itch to build and create!

I wanted to add some colorful, creative inspiration to this little corner of the world, so I hung up bunting, added the Schoolgirl Style Woodland Whimsy Poster Set and Schoolgirl Style Giant Woodland Whimsy Butterfly Cutouts.

I used the Schoolgirl Style Giant Woodland Whimsy Butterfly Cutouts not only for extra decoration, but also to help separate little work stations. Setting out these little butterfly markers gives each child their special space to create. You can even add a space in the middle for shared supplies such as tape, markers or glue!

Now that you have a space, let's fill it! Most importantly, you will need to have storage to organize all of the different materials you're going to include in this creative space. I absolutely ADORE this set of six Neon Picture Book Bins. They help keep everything organized and don't take up too much space.

Not only do these bins add color to a makerspace corner, but they help control the creative chaos. You can easily add in a variety of materials to these bins. This Makerspace Craft Supplies Boredom Buster Kit contains EVERYTHING you need to fill these bins.

Included in this set are: four yarn bundles, magnets, pipe cleaners, nine colorful masking tape rings, 48 craft rolls, tissue paper squares and popsicles sticks. I added in glue, construction paper and 12-Color Sharpie® Fine Point Permanent Markers to decorate and add details to their creations.

Now, let the planning begin! My kids fell in love with the MANY ideas shared in this Makerspace Book Set.

These three books help spark ideas and gave them a jumping off point. These books also give easy, step-by-step instructions, with pictures that make creating and designing way easier.

Once the planning is done, let the creating begin! My kids loved going "shopping" in the supply bins. Their faces lit up as they made selections to execute their own fantastic projects!

My kids sat here for hours the first day I set this up. It was a like we went on a field trip for a day, but we were at home!

Makerspace corners promote so many amazing skills, and I saw that play out by adding this little corner to our home. I saw skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, teamwork and collaboration, creativity and imagination blossom.

I am so excited to watch my kids create more exciting projects.
