You've decided on a construction themed VBS – yay! But how do you put it all together? Use these construction VBS theme ideas and DIYs to create an engaging atmosphere where kids are encouraged to learn and grow in faith – and fun!
The Backdrop
Check out this awesome cityscape backdrop! It's the perfect setting for your construction VBS and it's easy to create as well. Start by hanging horizontal rows of Blue Gossamer to the wall. Make sure to overlap the different layers to create plenty of depth. Next, hang vertical rows of Dark Blue Gossamer, spaced to create building silhouettes. Layer colored paper rolls on top of each other to mimic a colorful cityscape. Create clouds by gathering white gossamer and pinning the fabric into wispy cloud shapes. If you have a smaller space that needs a background, try using the Construction VBS City Backdrop Banner no DIY required!
Check-In Station
Building a quick and easy check-in table for your construction themed VBS is as simple as setting up two sawhorses and topping it with a sheet of plywood. Cut a couple of Construction VBS Barricade Cardboard Stand-ups and prop them up under the table to hide the sawhorses.
Create a fun backdrop by securing four wood pallets together. Prop the pallets up against the wall or build a brace from scrap wood. Decorate the pallet wall with a roll of God at Work Construction Zone Plastic Streamers, Construction VBS Cutouts, Inflatable Construction VBS Tools, and a hand drawn blueprint.
Add some Manhole Cover Floor Decals and a Construction VBS Directional Sign to help kiddos find their way to the right station. Check out our construction VBS check-in station idea here for a fun way for kids to line up!
Large Group Area
Creating a space for large group activities is easy. Add tons of fun construction site elements by using construction themed stand-ups. We used the Construction VBS Archway as our focal point and added a yellow duct tape road to the floor. Just use your imagination!
Crumple kraft paper to resemble rocks and mounds of dirt and place them around the space. Along with a jackhammer and Construction VBS truck Cardboard Stand-up, add Cardboard Cinderblocks and a pile of gravel to really reinforce the construction theme.
Hang the inflatable Construction VBS Wrecking Ball from the ceiling for a total construction site atmosphere and you can even turn it into a learning aid! Use the Inflatable Wrecking Ball to knock down a stack of Cardboard Cinderblocks to help kiddos visualize how they can knock out and wreck sin! Snack Station
It doesn't have to be difficult to build a snack station that makes your VBS students really want to dig in! Creating a snack station for your VBS is as easy as stacking a few wood pallets to create the table base. Top the pallets with a piece of plywood to make a stable tabletop and then top it with a Construction VBS Plastic Tablecloth. You can quickly construct tables for your Construction themed VBS using two sawhorses topped with a sheet of plywood. Add a fun pegboard to the back and you have a craft station that's ready to inspire little ones to build with Jesus.
To create different levels on your VBS construction craft station, use DIY Wood Flower Box Centerpieces turned upside down to display crafting supplies. DIY Unfinished Wood Box Frames and large DIY Basswood Canvas Squares mimic the look of cut, stacked lumber are great for adding dimension to your craft station. You can even have the kids paint the wood for another fun yet functional craft! Check out how we created this construction craft station here. Need more craft ideas? Volunteer & Kids Shirts and Accessories
Provide plenty of construction-related wearables for your volunteers. While creativity is good, have them all wear at least one thing that easily identifies them as leaders so kids can easily spot them. Of course, your VBS kids will want to join in on the fun with their own construction wear. Check out all the fun construction related gear here.
