During the first days of school it is important to take time to build relationships and get to know each other! This active get to know you game is a fun icebreaker activity for the first week of school. I love getting my students outside as much as possible and since the weather is usually still beautiful at the beginning of the year this game is great for outdoors. However, if the weather isn't cooperating to play outside, you can easily do this game inside too.
How to Set Up the Game: 1. Print off and cut out the printable for Questions for the Discs. Click “download template” button under the materials list to get the free printable. 2. Use the Surebonder® Cool Shot™ Low Temperature Fused Mini Glue Gun to glue a question to each Bright Color Flying Disc.
3. Write each student's name onto a craft stick and put all of the craft sticks into a Black Favor Pail.
4. Take the Happy Face Nylon Bean Bags, discs, and name pail outside with you and place the discs on the grass into 4 rows.
How to Play the Game: 1. Pull a student's name out of the Black Favor Pail. Make it fun and keep students engaged by having students give a drum roll before you pull the name out!
2. Give the student three Happy Face Nylon Bean Bags and have him throw 1 bean bag at a time to try to land on a disc. Once he lands a bean bag on a disc, he does not need to keep throwing. If he doesn't hit a disc, choose the disc that a bean bag is closest to.
3. Read the question to the class on the disc that the bean bag landed on or near.
4. As the student is thinking of his answer, have the rest of the students do the action on the disc. Tell the action to the class and give a countdown for them to do the movement. I'd recommend doing the action for 5-10 seconds. Be sure to model your expectations for the movement time. When you get to 1, everyone needs to be frozen in their spots, with eyes and ears on the student who is ready to answer the question. Our students need movement, so this quick action on each disc will help keep your class engaged during the game while providing think time for the student answering.
5. Once the student answers the question, have the class give him a cheer!
6. Repeat steps 1-5 until all of the students have had a turn.
Have fun and enjoy getting to know each other!
