Cinco de Mayo is a meaningful holiday celebrated among my students, so it’s the perfect opportunity to incorporate their culture and traditions in the classroom. Small moments like this really bring a sense of pride, inclusion, and celebration to all of the different cultures represented in my class!
As a whole group we brainstormed what the students do to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I wrote all of their suggestions on the board so the students could use it as a reference for their writing. Once we shared our thoughts, the students wrote a sentence about what they do in their family to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. For this first draft, we used mustache pencils and erasers to write.
Next, the students traced their sentence with a marker or pen so their writing would be more visible once hung on the wall. This also gives them one more opportunity to practice writing a sentence and letters! I can also make any edits during this time to make sure their sentence makes sense. ;)
Once they were finished writing we glued the sentence strip onto a mustache tray and added mustache jewels to their paper for a little extra flair.
Now we have an adorable Cinco de Mayo bulletin board to show off during open house. I am sure the parents will love seeing what Cinco de Mayo means to their child!
