Trunk or treats are such a fun Halloween tradition. In our family, they are a complete win-win in everyone's book. I love the opportunity to get creative in decorating and theming our trunk display while knowing that the kids can walk around gathering their treats in a safe, confined environment. My boys are all about the candy, so they love being able to walk from car to car loading up their Halloween treat bags. The trunks that always stand out in all of our minds are the ones that have a unique twist and an interactive game element. With that in mind, I decided that our I Scream and Candy Shop should have a ring toss game for the kids to play, as well as serve some different treats. Adding a cooler as part of our display made it possible to provide pre-packaged ice cream treats, as well as candy to all of our trick or treaters as they were enjoying the festivities.
Setting up shop is easy with this theme! Start by taping together 3 pieces of black foam board and wrapping them with spider webs. Place them in the far back of your trunk. Depending on the height of your trunk you might want to elevate the boards by placing a box beneath them to prop them up. Wrap the box, or fill in any remaining spaces, with Freaky Fabric Halloween Decoration. Next, cut a scalloped edge and paint stripes on 2 tri-fold presentation boards with yellow acrylic paint to create the awning. To add to the theme, glue plastic bugs on the awning too! Then, position your Life Size Posable Skeletons on the left and right sides of your trunk, leaving a space in between them for your shop sign. Every shop employee, with a pulse or not, needs a uniform! I transformed these Donut Party Hats into I Scream & Candy Shop hats by gluing the themed printable on both sides. Then, to add a little touch of whimsy, I also glued a small section of Fiesta Fringe Garland into the hats to create the look of pink and blue hair. Next, I dressed each skeleton in a bug-covered yellow apron.
Once our skeleton shop employees were ready for work, I then set up the table. To create the illusion of a counter, I taped together 3 pieces of black foam board and wrapped Black & White Striped Table Runners around the boards. I also attached Plush Ice Cream Cones with Spider Rings wrapped around them to the counter.
Next, I filled the shop with plenty of creepy candy and treats. I used the Handblown Glass Apothecary Large Jar with Lid in the center of the table and the smaller Glass Jar Set, along with Black Candy Scoops, to add to the display. I filled with jars and Ice Cream Dishes with salt water taffy, white and lime green Sixlets, Earthworm Gummy Candy, Realistic Bugs Gummy Candy, Gumball Eyes, Body Parts Gummy Candy, Tarantulas Gummy Candy, Black Hard Candy Sticks, and Black Cat Character Lollipops. I loved how almost all of the candy came individually wrapped. I was able to unwrap some to make my own treat bags and boxes, while also leaving plenty in the Black Cauldron bowl for trick or treaters passing by. Our DIY I Scream Creepy Cone Ring Toss Game was full of shrieks and squeals! As a prize for ringing a creepy cone, our little trick or treaters got an Ice Cream Cone Shooter. These were a huge hit no pun intended! Is it a trick or a treat? You decide!
Even with potential social distancing measures in place for your trunk or treat this year, there are still lots of ways to make trunk or treat fun and safe for everyone! Build stanchions to keep distance between cars and encourage social distancing. To make your own stanchions, fill galvanized pails with gravel. Place a garden stake in each pail and then slide a black craft noodle over each one. Finish your stanchions by pushing a foam pumpkin over the top of each garden stake. You can now tie plastic streamers from one stanchion to another to create dividers to use between cars or to mark social distancing areas. In addition, volunteers who are handing out candy can use grabbers to avoid picking up the candy and also wear Halloween themed face masks to help keep everyone safe. Remember to have some hand sanitizer available so it's easy for everyone to keep their hands clean.
